The Wear of Needs is a socially-engaged art project that reinterprets a theory by Abraham Maslows on universal needs.  That is, the project is a modern exploration of commonalities between each of usQ.

A long-term project of Filipino artist Mae Aguinaldo,  the Wear of Needs series is inspired by stories, places, and people from different parts of the world. It uses the T-shirt as canvas.

The first piece of the series, Treading Hope,  was created in 2012 in response to the Philippine experience during super typhoon Ondoy (or Ketsana).  Treading Hope is about rebuilding.

Development of the series continued in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, where three pieces were created, inspired by the stories, places and people the artist encountered there.  The pieces were Limits and Resistances, banned liquid papers, and Dream of a Nation: Muddy Confluence.

The series was later presented in West Java, Indonesia, with three new pieces inspired by the artist’s research and experience there: Word cloud, Mega Mendung, and Seed.

The latest addition to the series is ‘seasons change‘, another piece on the artist’s home country that addresses migration and a people’s resilience.

The Wear of Needs is a product of multiple collaborations.  Drop the artist a line if you are interested in taking the series or any of its pieces further.  Email at wearmesa(at)yahoo.com.
